The dark glowing backdrop is looming beneath the powerful yet haunting cut-out figures, which creates the illusion of a moving magical world. A world that moves around in the candlelight. Their whole existence relies on me; the puppeteer and animator to bring their world to life. The characters are a direct descendant from traditional shadow puppets, which you see around the world in ancient cultures to entertain and pass down tales of their past.

When I was clearing out a dusty ancient stock cupboard in an old school I found an old book, it was beckoning me from the darkness. I reached up to the shelf and grabbed it down. The bind was old and delicate. The colour is a red blood red. I read the cover and wiped the sleeve with my arm and read "The World in Pictures' I opened it up and felt a warmth all over me. I had stumbled onto a world I never knew. A world that was long forgotten. I felt excited for the book and the people trapped inside it. A sudden sense of motherhood and ownership. I could finally hold a world in my hands. A world without technology, change and where all the people connected to it are most likely dead.
